Each Chinese New Year is represented by one of 12 animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac. The Year of the Monkey is the ninth animal in the cycle.

People born in the Year of the Monkey are said to be quick-witted and mischievous. However, Monkey years are also believed by some to be one of the most unlucky years in the Chinese calendar.

The Chicago Chinese New Year parade attracts a crowd of an estimated 30,000 annually.

Last year, the parade lasted about an hour. Among those in attendance celebrating the Year of the Ram in 2015 were Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Gov. Bruce Rauner.
