Uber Drivers and Cabbies Being Robbed Downtown, Police Say

DOWNTOWN — Robbers are stealing cellphones from cabs and Uber cars after they hitch rides Downtown and distract the drivers, police said.

In the seven robberies since Dec. 22, police said the suspects present "various ruses" to the drivers and take cellphones. Sometimes they pretend to hand out fliers on the street, and other times they hail a ride. In one robbery, a suspect showed a handgun, police said.

The robberies occurred at:

• 7 p.m. Dec. 22 in the first block of East Randolph Street.

• 2:55 p.m. Jan. 2 in the 100 block of North State Street.

• 3:30 p.m. Jan. 7 in the 100 block of North State Street.

• 3:15 p.m. Jan. 7 in the first block of East Randolph.

• 3:31 p.m. Jan. 15 in the 100 block of North Michigan Avenue.

• 5:48 p.m. Jan. 16 in the 100 block of North Michigan Avenue.

• 2:15 p.m. Jan. 19 in the first block East Lake Street.

The suspects are described as:

• A 5'1", 165-pound black man between the ages of 15 and 17.

•A 5'7", 165-pound black man between 20 and 25 years old.

•A 5'8", 175-pound black man between 24 and 27 years old.

•A 5'4" black man between the ages of 21 and 23 years old weighing between 145 and 155 pounds. 

•A black boy between the ages of 13 and 17 years old.
