CANARYVILLE — At one of his first appearances at a neighborhood meeting this year, Ald. Patrick D. Thompson (11th) shared a brief update of ongoing public safety projects in the 11th Ward.

Among them? Tree trimming, replacing streetlights — and installing more police cameras in the ward.

Here’s what Thompson had to say about what the city is doing to keep the neighborhood safe:

Police Cameras

"We've been working with the commander of the 9th District for locations for cameras," Thompson said. "They're not going to be the big, blue flashy ones, but they're the subtle ones."

You can find some of the cameras already installed in the area, Thompson said. The cameras are similar to the ones installed at places like CVS or outside restaurants.

“They look almost like cell phones, but those are the cameras to make sure that we're all safe," he said. "We're going to be putting those around... so then you and I will know it's there. If there's any bad guys, they'll know there's a camera there."

Tree Trimming

In recent weeks, Thompson has been "chipping away" at a backlog of tree-trimming requests.

And for residents who want dead trees completely removed from their property? “That’ll be done next,” he said.

There are about 20 requests for dead tree removal at the 11th Ward offices.

"Hopefully in the next few weeks they'll be coming out and removing trees during the week,” Thompson said.

Trimmed trees will make streetlights shine brighter on the road, he added.

Street Lights

“We’ve done a lot of the roads,” Thompson said. “We’re focusing on replacing some of the old lights with some of these new LEDs to make it brighter.”
