UPTOWN — Primary CrossFit and Yoga "very softly" opened its doors in Uptown with a crossfit training class Monday morning, said co-owner Stephanie Shalit.

The gym at 5050 N. Sheridan Road will begin its power yoga class on Monday with plans to expand its offerings, Shalit said.

"We are starting out with CrossFit and Power Yoga. Ideally, we will be adding in kids CrossFit and kids yoga," Shalit said. "We have created what we feel is a higher-end boutique CrossFit."

CrossFit is a combination of training principles, including cardiovascular, strength, agility, balance, flexibility, coordination and more, according to its website.

The 3,200-square-foot gym has men's and women's locker rooms both equipped with three showers and a yoga area, Shalit said.

The gym will offer small group classes led by a certified trainer.

Shalit has been practicing yoga since she was a teen and has been teaching yoga since 2000. She was trained by Baron Baptiste and global yoga teacher Shiva Rea. She has taught yoga at several gyms as well as "privately to the elite of New York and Chicago," according to the Primary Crossfit and Yoga website.

Co-owner Ramon Shalit is a certified level 1 CrossFit trainer and is also ACE certified. He's also played soccer around the world and was a nationally ranked tennis player in his youth, the website said.
