BEVERLY — A student at Kellogg Elementary School brought an unloaded gun into the school Tuesday, according to Ald. Matt O'Shea (19th).
Chicago Police are investigating the incident, which did not lead to any injuries at Kellogg, 9241 S. Leavitt St., O'Shea said.
According to the alderman, a student brought an unloaded revolver into the school when a classmate noticed the gun in a book bag and told school officials. The gun was never removed from the bag by students, O'Shea said.
After school officials learned of the incident, officers and officials with the CPS Office of Student Safety and Security removed the student from the building, O'Shea said.
The student was "detained and processed," O'Shea wrote in a letter to constituents. The weapon likely belongs to one of the student's parents who works in law enforcement, O'Shea said.
A Chicago Police spokesman said officers responded to the school and inventoried the weapon, and area detectives are questioning the student.
The school's principal did not comment, referring questions to Chicago Public Schools.
"The safety of students and staff is among the District's highest priorities," CPS spokesperson Michael Passman said in a statement. "School administrators at Kellogg followed proper procedures today, and law enforcement was immediately notified."
O'Shea added: "In the meantime, I will work closely with the principal and CPS to review school security plans and ensure a safe educational environment for the students."
