ROGERS PARK — Police are warning businesses in Rogers Park and Edgewater after a string of at least five commercial burglaries this month.
In a community alert, police said someone has broken into businesses by either prying open the back door or breaking through locks.
In one case, the window of a back door was smashed. in another, a screen door was cut in order to get to a glass panel — which was subsequently smashed so the the dead bolt could be unlocked, police said.
During the break-ins, items are taken from the businesses or an attempt is made to pry open the cash register for the money inside.
Police said security camera footage from at least one incident showed the burglar as a black man with a goatee. He was between 5-foot-11 and 6-foot-2 and weighed between 180-210 pounds, police said. In the footage, he wore a knitted hat, hooded sweatshirt and heavy jacket with a hood.
