CHICAGO — The protests against Rahm Emanuel have spilled outside Chicago's borders.

On Wednesday morning in Washington D.C., a protester interrupted a national conference of mayors to call for Chicago's mayor to resign.

As the mayor of Flint, Michigan, spoke about the water crisis there, the protester stepped in front of her and hoisted a sign that said, "16 shots and a coverup. #LaquanMcDonald #ResignRahm." The sign echoed the chants that filled the streets after the city released a video of police fatally shooting 17-year-old Laquan McDonald 16 times.

Live video showed the Flint mayor, Karen Weaver, continuing to speak and answer questions while the protester stood in front of her at the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Washington, D.C. The protester, who was silent, held her sign and stood before attendees even after Weaver finished speaking and left.

Emanuel has faced calls to resign since the release of the McDonald video, though he's said he has no plans of leaving.

Emanuel was scheduled to attend and speak at the conference, but it was not immediately clear if he was attending the news conference interrupted by the protester.
