COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A Bronzeville man has been charged with shooting two brothers in Austin following an argument earlier this month.

The victims, ages 28 and 34, were inside an apartment with several people on Jan. 2 when one of the women present began "acting loudly" sometime before 5 a.m., Assistant State's Attorney Erin Antonietti said during a bond hearing Tuesday.

The woman was asked to leave and quiet down, prosecutors said, but she continued to be rowdy outside. That's when the woman called Steven McKinnie, the 27-year-old father of her child, Antonietti said.

McKinnie and several others arrived at the apartment in the 500 block of South Lavergne Avenue a short while later, according to authorities.

McKinnie opened fire — striking each brother three times, Antonietti said. The 28-year-old was shot in his back and armpit, while the 34-year-old was shot in his back and abdomen, prosecutors said.

According to Antonietti, one of the brothers is still being intubated at a local hospital. No further details were immediately available.

Police on Jan. 4 issued a warrant for McKinnie, who was arrested this week after he violated his parole in a drug case, prosecutors said. McKinnie has six prior felony convictions for drugs and driving cases.

McKinnie, of the 4300 block of South Evans Avenue, is charged with two counts of aggravated battery by discharging a firearm.

His defense attorney on Tuesday said McKinnie has three children and works in a meat-packing factory.

Cook County Judge Donald Panarese Jr. on Tuesday ordered McKinnie held in lieu of $500,000 bail.
