THE LOOP — The Adams Street Bridge will be closed to drivers later this month for a "major reconstruction" project expected to last more than a year, according to a Tuesday announcement from the Chicago Department of Transportation.

Starting after evening rush hour Jan. 25, cars headed across the South Branch of the Chicago River will be redirected to Wacker Drive, Madison Street or Van Buren Street, officials said. Pedestrians on their way to Union Station will still be able to cross the bridge for now, although they'll be barred for short periods "later this year."

The project will comprise "reconstruction of the existing viaduct structure over the Union Station tracks, improvements to the Adams Street and Canal Street intersection, new street lighting and traffic signals, improved roadway drainage and structural and electrical improvements to the Adams Street Bascule Bridge," according to the announcement.

Bus routes over the river will be rerouted to Van Buren Street via Wacker Drive, officials said.
