ASHBURN — Richard J. Daley College will build a $75 million "state-of-the-art advanced manufacturing facility" for students enrolled in City Colleges' burgeoning College to Careers Initiative, according to an announcement from Mayor Rahm Emanuel's office.

"Over the next decade, an estimated 14,000 manufacturing jobs will be coming to the Chicagoland region," the announcement read. "The Daley project is one lever in the Mayor’s agenda to prepare a workforce of skilled workers to meet the growing demand in this industry."

Started in 2011, the College to Careers initiative has trained high school graduates in skills like welding and pipe-fitting, fields where many experts say workers are in high demand. Enrollment in the program has grown every year, with 144 students signed up in the 2015-16 school year, according to Daley College dean Ray Prendergast.

The new facility will be ready for students by fall 2018, officials said.
