SOUTH LOOP — How trendy is the South Loop? It's getting its own Stan's Donuts outlet, the fourth in the city from the California-based purveyor of "classic, yet indulgent doughnuts."

For red-hot foodie prestige, Starbucks can't even hope to compete when Stan's opens Jan. 16 at 28 E. Roosevelt Road.

The South Loop steps up alongside Streeterville, Wicker Park and most recently Lakeview as landing spots for Stan's outlets, and the doughnut shop will revive a marketing device it used with the Lakeview opening last fall.

The first 100 customers at each Stan's outlet will receive an envelope with a mystery gift, and one person at the South Loop location will win doughtnuts for life, while the other outlets give out top prizes of free doughnuts for a full year. Other prizes include free coffee, gelato and — again just at the South Loop location — swag such as shirts and coffee mugs.

"We're excited to start the new year with a new Stan's," said owner Rich Labriola, adding, "2016 will bring our fresh, fun and somewhat old-school experience to more Chicagoans."

Stan's shops boast of offering 30 different doughnut varieties a day, from glazed and cake to the franchise's signature Pockets in flavors ranging from peanut butter to Nutella. They also serve coffee, of course, as well as soft-serve gelato.

Chicago hours are 6:30 a.m.-9 p.m. The other locations are at 259 E. Erie St., 1560 N. Damen Ave. and 2800 N. Clark St.
