GOLD COAST — Three people were injured during a shooting outside the W Chicago Lakeshore hotel on Sunday morning, police said.

At 2:15 a.m., a 25-year-old man was standing outside a hotel in the 600 block of North Lake Shore Drive when a dark-colored SUV pulled up and someone inside fired "numerous" shots at the man, said Officer Jose Estrada, Chicago Police spokesman. The shooter drove away.

The man was shot multiple times throughout his body and was taken to Northwestern Hospital by a friend, Estrada said. He was in critical condition.

Later, two men were treated at Illinois Masonic Medical Center for gunshot wounds they said were from the hotel shooting, Estrada said. A 32-year-old man was hit in his head and was in critical condition, and a 30-year-old man was hit in the left side of his abdomen and was in critical condition.

Police have not determined if the two other victims were inside or outside the hotel during the shooting, Estrada said.

All of the victims are documented gang members, police said, and that might have played a role in the shooting. They are not cooperating with investigators.

Representatives from the hotel, 644 N. Lake Shore Drive, and the W Hotels and Resorts chain did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

In a statement to NBC, the W Hotel said: "We are thankful that no registered guests or our talent were injured in the incident during the night, as most of the events occurred outside the hotel.  We have been working closely with the authorities throughout their investigation.  As this is an active investigation, we are unable to provide further details and any additional information must come from the Chicago Police Department."
