CHICAGO — It's about to become more expensive to be a permanent Divvy customer, officials announced Wednesday.

Starting Feb. 1, the cost of new annual Divvy ridership plans will jump from $75 to $99.

Customers will also have the new option of paying $9.95 on a monthly basis, although the plan would still require a one-year commitment.

The hike comes just months after Divvy increased the day rates for bike rentals from $7 to $9.95. They will not be raising those rates any further.

When they announced that increase in July, Divvy said the hike would cover the cost of expanding the bike sharing program.

Divvy lost $500,000 in operating cost in 2014 and the city was forced to use grants to erase the debt. The price boost is expected to bring in an additional $800,000 annually, the Chicago Tribune reports.

In a little over two years of operation, Divvy has grown rapidly to become the largest bike share system in North America based on geographic area served," Chicago Department of Transportation spokesman Michael Claffey told DNAinfo Wednesday. "In order to maintain the high level of customer service that our users have become accustomed to and to continue to grow the program, it was necessary to make this price adjustment."
