LOGAN SQUARE — Neighborhood businesses and local leaders want to make sure Logan Square can be enjoyed all winter long, especially for those commuting on foot through the snow.

That is if it ever actually snows.

The pact of businesses and neighborhood groups have all agreed to pitch in to cover the cost to plow the paths through Logan Square surrounding the Illinois Centennial Monument as well as the west side of Milwaukee Avenue, the pedestrian crosswalk across Kedzie Boulevard and the angled crosswalk on Logan Boulevard.

The cost is estimated at between $2,400 and $4,000 for the season.

Participating entities include Lula Cafe, Boulevard Bikes, Play/Shop 1021, Reno, Logan Square Auditorium, Logan Square Preservation, R.P. Fox & Associates, and the offices of Ald. Scott Waguespack, Ald. Carlos Ramirez-Rosa and state Rep. Will Guzzardi.

"It's great to see so many of our businesses and community leaders stand up and take responsibility for clearing snow from this great space at the center of our neighborhood," said Andrew Schneider, president of Logan Square Preservation.

The preservation group was the main organizer of the program.

Schneider said the group wants to ensure that the area is cleared not only for pedestrians, but for those who need to use the accessible CTA Logan Square "L" station.

The group has already hired a contractor. But with forecasts in the upper 50s this week, it might be a while before the service is needed.

Logan Square Preservation is looking for volunteers to shovel other areas of the boulevards. Anyone interested can email the group at logansquarepreservation@gmail.com.
