UPTOWN — State Rep. Greg Harris will visit Truman College on Wednesday in hopes of recruiting volunteers for the Center for Economic Progress.

From 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, Harris (13th District), returning volunteers and staff from the Center of Economic Progress, including its CEO David Marzahl, will host an open house at the college's cafeteria at 1145 W. Wilson Ave. Harris will be speaking about the state budget's impact on the local community and how volunteering "helps provide families with financial security," according to a news release.

"Each year volunteers help tens of thousands of low-income residents file their tax returns at no cost. [The Center for Economic Progress] needs to recruit over 1,000 volunteers to assist with their 2016 tax assistance campaign," the release said.

New volunteers are invited to learn about the Center for Economic Progress, which "helps low income, working families as a trusted provider of tax and financial services." The group was founded in 1990 by veteran public benefits lawyer Michael O'Connor. It was originally called the Center of Law and Human Services and "focused on helping homeless families and individuals access services," according to its website.

Volunteers will also learn about training and certification requirements.

"Last year, [the Center for Economic Progress] helped put more than $30 million back into the pockets of over 17,000 low-income Illinois families; equivalent to 6 weeks of take-home pay.  This year, they are aiming to help 20,000 families, but cannot do it without more volunteers," the release said.

A light dinner and beverages will be provided at the meeting.
