CHICAGO — You shouldn't bet on a white Christmas if you're staying in the city.

Chicago's had mild weather for weeks and has only seen one substantial snowfall this season, and that melted within days. Now, AccuWeather meteorologist Tom Kines is predicting a snow-less Christmas.

"The cold air that we're getting later this week, it's gonna be short-lived. A good chunk of Christmas week, it's gonna be very mild," Kines said. "I guess if you were a betting person, you would bet on a brown Christmas."

If Kines' prediction pans out, this will be the second "brown Christmas" in a row for Chicago, which had no snow on the ground for the holiday last year.

But, there's a slim hope for snow: Rain is expected to come through the city next week, and cold air could turn that into a dusting of snow toward the end of the storm on Christmas day, Kines said.

"From this far out it's pretty tough to say what the odds of that happening are," Kines said. "The overall weather pattern does not favor accumulating snow. I guess if you're rooting for a white Christmas, you've got to root for the cold air to come in at the tail end of the storm.

"In general, it's gonna be a tough sled for Santa."
