MOUNT GREENWOOD — The outdoor ice rink at Mount Greenwood Park remains a slab of concrete, but the unseasonably warm temperatures aren't to blame.

The rink at 3724 W. 111th St. was supposed to open on Friday. However, the debut was delayed by needed repairs, according to Jessica Maxey-Faulkner, a spokeswoman for the Chicago Park District.

She expects the rink on the Far Southwest Side to open later this week.

The rink, officially known as the Chicago Blackhawks Ice Rink at Mount Greenwood Park, was rumored to be closing after the debut of the Morgan Park Sports Center.

The indoor ice arena and gymnastics facility at 11505 S. Western Avenue opened Sept. 1 — just 2.2 miles away from the aging outdoor facility.

But Ald. Matt O'Shea (19th) said the park district has committed to upkeep both facilities open as long as the community continues to show support by using the outdoor rink.

"I just stress to people to continue to utilize it," O'Shea said earlier this month.

The Mount Greenwood rink has historically been one of the most-used outdoor rinks among the eight similar facilities operated by the park district, O'Shea said.

"As long as the community utilizes it — like in years past — we will continue to have that rink," he said.
