EDGEWATER — To promote keeping the neighborhood's local business scene strong this holiday shopping season, more than $3,000 in goodies are being given away — if you know where to look.

Starting Nov. 28, the Saturday after Thanksgiving, 75 cloth bags filled with more than $40 worth of swag from Edgewater businesses will be hidden in neighborhood stores over the course of five weeks.

The scavenger hunt, sponsored by the Edgewater Chamber of Commerce, coincides with Small Business Saturday — a national movement similar to Black Friday and Cyber Monday that promotes supporting local business owners during the gift-giving season.

Edgewater, like other neighborhoods throughout the city, have participated in the event in recent years, and those who find goodie bags are asked to post a photo online using the hashtag #shopedgewater and #shoplocal.

“The Holiday Hunt is a fun way to increase awareness of and drive business to Edgewater retailers,” said Jenn Hackman, the chamber's economic development manager. “We hope that it will encourage residents to think about how local businesses can fit into their holiday gift lists.”

Many businesses have already begun promoting holiday sales and special gift items — a few of them are found here on our 2015 Far North Side gift guide.

On Saturday, some stores will also be offering special sales on top of the goodie bags, including:

Audio Archaeology: Free gift wrapping on purchases over $20.

Edgewater Workbench: Hosting an open house from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. with 3D printing and lasercutting demonstrations all day, as well as trunk shows and meet-and-greets with artists. For more information, click here.

Euphoria Resale: Blowout sale from Nov. 27 to Dec. 5 gets you 50 percent off all purchases in each of the Euphoria Resale’s three connected storefronts.

Maddiebird Bakery: Offering 25 percent off orders of three or more cupcakes, plus $1 small Metropolis coffees.

Other neighborhood businesses, like Clark Devon Hardware, Salon Echo, Independent Spirits, Inc., and Jackalope Theatre will also be offering special deals.
