ROGERS PARK — A week after a brazen daytime shooting at Willye B. White Park left Eric Jordan, 25, dead, neighbors plan to come together and enjoy the park while brainstorming ideas to "promote" peace in the community.

On Nov. 14, Jordan died from a gunshot wound to his back at the park as state officials, local businesses and residents gathered inside the park's field house for a community resource expo and children played outside.

On Saturday, community members will once again convene at the Howard Street park from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to "utilize our beautiful park and the new equipment," the event's Facebook page says.

At noon, some residents said they will gather for a vigil at the park to honor Jordan, as well as other victims of violence in the city, and "pray that this senseless violence will end."

At a Park Advisory Council meeting for the park Tuesday night, council members, Chicago Park District representatives and residents discussed the possibility of putting chains on the park's gates at night as a way to deter crime and make the offense of trespassing "more enforceable," said Bill Morton, president of the Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce.

Morton said the group also talked about the potential of installing surveillance cameras and hiring security guards at the park, as well as increasing a police presence at public events.

A park district representative did not immediately provide comment.
