Tennis Courts Open at Maggie Daley Park

By David Matthews | November 10, 2015 5:53am

DOWNTOWN — Those who want to take a swing at tennis before it turns cold can do so now at Maggie Daley Park.

Six new hard courts opened Friday in the northeast corner of the Downtown park, according to the Chicago Park District. By Monday afternoon a few people were already trying the courts out.

The courts arrive after a quarrel between neighbors about how the parkland near Randolph Street and Lake Shore Drive should have been used. Tennis players wanted a replacement for the 12 courts that have since made way for the new Maggie Daley Park, 337 E. Randolph St., while some of those who live near the park thought tennis courts were too seasonal and too focused a use for the land once called Peanut Park.

The courts are free and open for now from sunrise to sunset, according to the park district. Tennis lovers will need to bring their own equipment, though. Reservations and equipment rental will arrive next year, the park district says.
