SOUTH CHICAGO — A 14-year-old boy was seriously wounded in a Thursday evening shooting in South Chicago, police said.

Around 4:30 p.m., the boy was reportedly on a basketball court at Bessemer Park, across from Bowen High School and Baker College Prep, when he was shot in his chest, police and media reports said.

He was taken to Christ Hospital in serious condition, according to Officer Thomas Sweeney, a Chicago Police spokesman.

The boy was at a basketball court when he was hit, reported ABC7. Police arrested one of the men, who had a gun, according to ABC7, but Chicago Police did not confirm or deny that Thursday evening.

The mother of the boy, Joi Houston, told the Tribune that she was on her way to pick him up from school when she got the call.

I was distraught, like, I can't breathe, I was in the middle of traffic, I was..." Houston told the Tribune.
