CHICAGO — The Maggie Daley Park ice ribbon will open next week, two weeks before the rest of the city's ice skating facilities, according to the park district.

The popular skating ribbon will open Saturday, Nov. 14, weather permitting, according to the district. Accuweather's forecast for the day calls for a high of 50 degrees with plenty of sun.

The rest of the city's public ice skating rinks will open Nov. 27, the district said.

Ice skating at Maggie Daley park has quickly become one of the park's most popular amenities. The rock climbing wall, also a popular feature at the park, closed Oct. 25.

More than 28,000 skates have been rented, and more than $300,000 in fees collected, since the Maggie Daley skating ribbon opened in late 2014. The ribbon has capacity for 700 skaters, but given demand, the Chicago Park District said in a statement it will "continue to evaluate the park operations and make efficiencies."

Maggie Daley Park's ribbon is one of nine ice sheets — one for about every 300,000 Chicagoans — run by the park district throughout the city. City Hall runs the Millennium Park ice rink, which is also often packed.

And given that this winter might not resemble the snow-buried Chiberia of the past few years, ice skating days might be at a premium. Ice skating in park-district-run rinks will close Feb. 28, weather permitting.

Start planning accordingly, Chicago.
