COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A South Deering man fatally stabbed someone 12 times after the pair spent the evening smoking crack cocaine, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Brandon Young, 43, is charged with first-degree murder.

According to authorities, Young smoked crack cocaine with Dorian Smith, 43, and a witness in a South Shore apartment in the 7800 block of South South Shore Drive from late Friday into early Saturday.

At one point, Young and Smith left to buy more crack, Assistant State's Attorney Molly Donnelly said during a bond hearing Wednesday. When the men returned, the trio continued to smoke.

As the group got ready for bed sometime around 12:30 a.m. Saturday, according to the witness, Young began to stab Smith multiple times, Donnelly said. Prosecutors didn't provide a possible motive.

The witness, who'd been in a bedroom, heard moaning and walked into the living room to find Young — a knife in each hand — repeatedly stabbing Smith, Donnelly said.

The witness ran to a bedroom and tried to call 911, but Young took away the phone, according to prosecutors. Young, then went to his own nearby home and called police. He was arrested within an hour.

According to Donnelly, police recovered two knives: one with an 8-inch blade and one with a 3.5-inch blade. The witness identified Young in a lineup.

Smith, of the 8100 block of South Bishop Street in Auburn Gresham, was stabbed in his outer hand, ribcage, back, chin, lip and three times in the back of his skull, prosecutors said. He was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital at 1:11 a.m. Saturday.

Young, of the 2200 block of East 102nd Street, was arrested Saturday. His initial bond hearing was delayed because Young complained of chest pains and was admitted to a hospital, according to court testimony. On Wednesday, Cook County Judge Laura Sullivan ordered Young held without bail.

Prior convictions include unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a controlled substance, possesion of a stolen motor vehicle and robbery.
