CHICAGO — A DNA analysis has matched the remains of a toddler recovered from the Garfield Park lagoon to 2-year-old Kyrian Knox, police said Wednesday.

Knox has been missing from his home in Rockford, Ill., since Aug. 20, according to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

His mother said he was staying with a family friend in Rockford while she moved from Iowa to Chicago, according to ABC7.

Investigators collected DNA samples of the dismembered head, hands and feet found in Garfield Park Lagoon Sept. 5.

The investigation remains "open and ongoing," according to Officer Veejay Zala, a Chicago Police spokesman, but no further information was available. The FBI directed all media requests to Chicago Police.

Now that the child's remains have been identified, Ald. Jason Ervin (28th) said police can investigate what events occurred before the remains were discarded in the Garfield Park lagoon. Ervin had not discussed next steps in the investigation with police yet, he said.

"Hopefully whoever did this will be soon brought to justice," Ervin said Wednesday night.
