COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — Two brothers have been charged with first-degree murder in connection to the August shooting that killed John Short.
A third man, 25-year-old Robert Nathaniel, was also charged over the weekend and held in lieu of $1 million bail.
According to prosecutors, the fatal shooting stemmed from an argument two young girls were having about the way one of them dressed. The fight escalated and members of each girl's family got involved.
Quentin Bradley, 29, met with two other people the evening of Aug. 26 to try to settle the dispute, authorities said. But after a discussion at K & K Foods & Liquor, where Bradley worked as a security guard, the families parted ways and there was still "bad blood," according to prosecutors.
As the two people walked away, Nathaniel ran into an alley near the Back of the Yards store and fired one shot, police and prosecutors said. He didn't hit anyone.
Moments before the shooting, Bradley and his younger brother, 26-year-old Quan Evans, were seen talking to Nathaniel on surveillance footage outside the liquor store at 1130 W. 51st St., prosecutors said.
Evans was allegedly caught on camera pulling a gun out of his trunk and handing it to Bradley, who then handed it to Nathaniel. Bradley returned to the store, prosecutors said, and, about two minutes later, a witness spotted Nathaniel running into the alley, where he fired a single shot.
The two people who'd been shot at ran home and told others what happened, prosecutors said. At that point, a group went back to the alley, where Nathaniel came out and fired three or four shots toward everyone — fatally striking 23-year-old John Short.
Short was shot in his back and pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital, police said.
Officers recovered three 40mm shell casings at the scene, and Bradley admitted to the crime, prosecutors said.
Both Bradley and Evans were charged with first-degree murder.
Cook County Judge Laura Sullivan on Wednesday ordered Bradley held in lieu of $700,000 bail, while bail for Evans was set at $800,000.
According to the brothers' public defender, Bradley worked full-time as a security guard at K & K Foods & Liquor. Evans had two full-time jobs: He was a baker at Jewel-Osco and a surgical technician at Mount Sinai Hospital, his attorney said.
