LOGAN SQUARE — A group of angry Logan Square moms took their message of state legislators this week in the form of Dia de los Muertos altars.
The groups, fed up with the state budget crisis, built the altars in the legislators' offices Thursday, as a protest against budget cuts and lack of funds for schools and social services.
"Our schools, our family and friends, we are all suffering from these cuts," said Erika Soto, a mother of two. The group demanded revenue solutions to the budget problems, including increased taxes on the wealthy, corporations and financial institutions.
Soto learned of the crisis at a Logan Square Neighborhood Association workshop of Illinois' revenue issues, particularly that two-thirds of the state's corporations pay $0 in taxes.
The group of parents built altars in local legislators' offices including Rep. Will Guzzardi's, Rep. Jaime Andrade's, Rep. Cynthia Soto's, State Sen. William Delgado's and Rep. Luis Arroyo's.
The parents came together from eight Logan Square schools to deliver their message.
"Altars are built to honor ancestors and grieve a loss," Soto said. "Well, by building these altars, we are saying we want justice and solutions and fair taxes, not more cuts to education."
