Chicago Cupcake Coming to Wicker Park's 'Doughnut District'

WICKER PARK —  The neighborhood's streets are getting sweeter, as popular food truck Chicago Cupcake sets down permanent roots in a former Milwaukee Avenue bar, within one block of several other shops offering doughnuts, coffee and ice cream.

Launched in 2012 and known for its distinctive red food trucks, Chicago Cupcake got a business license earlier this week for a storefront at 1415 N. Milwaukee Ave., in the former Bar Bar Black Sheep, state records show.

The retail shop was planning a grand opening on Sunday, according to its website, though Chicago Cupcake owner Brendan Bolger said on Friday that he is aiming to open in mid-November.

In addition to cupcakes, the shop will bake cookies, chocolate cream pies and liege waffles onsite and serve Sparrow Coffee, Bolger said.

"It's difficult for us to launch multiple products from a food truck. It's limiting in what we can offer, so we wanted to expand further. Cupcakes will always be a big part of our business," Bolger said.

Bolger said Chicago Cupcake will bring a minimum of six new jobs to the neighborhood.  Hours are tentatively set for 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday-Friday; 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday - Sunday.

Both trucks, "Big Red" and "Lil Red," will continue to operate, he said.

On site Friday, the exterior of the 1870-era building was painted the same shade of red as the company's truck, with the windows papered over and a Chicago Cupcake logo adorning the front door.

Based on the Chicago Cupcake website, some menu items featured include turtle, key lime and banana foster cupcakes, sold at $3.75 each or $2.25 for "a mini."

An "Other Goodies" menu section offers waffles, cinnamon rolls, doughnuts and a pastry of the day.
