CHICAGO — Officers are investigating the death of a girl in Roseland, police said.

Cherish Foster, who was 8 years old, died at 9:44 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. She was found at her home in the 9200 block of South La Salle Street and was taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police are investigating the girl's death, but no further information was immediately available, said Officer Ana Pacheco, Chicago Police spokeswoman.

The Department of Childcare and Family Services is investigating the girl's mother "for allegations of abuse and neglect," said spokeswoman Veronica Resa. The department had no contact with the family before the girl's death, Resa said.

"The investigation is pending," Resa said. "Two siblings have been placed with a family member under a DCFS-monitored safety plan."
