CHICAGO — Police and fire officials are on the scene at a building collapse Downtown, closing the Randolph Street bridge to traffic ahead of rush hour Thursday evening.
The Chicago Fire Department tweeted around 3:50 p.m. there was a report of a building collapse at 150 N. Riverside Plaza for "concrete section collapsing."
About a 12 foot by 12 foot piece of "metal decking and concrete" fell 12 floors on the interior of the under-construction building, according to fire officials. No injuries were reported and all workers were accounted for.
Both pedestrian and vehicle traffic were directed away from the typically busy bridge Thursday as the evening commute got started. Congestion piled up along Wacker Drive as cars were diverted to alternate bridges.
Fire officials said that the site was secure around 5:50 p.m. They had brought in about 100 firefighters and 30 pieces of equipment to assist with the incident.
The $500 million, 53-story building broke ground in July 2014, about a year after it was publicly presented as a tower with "high-concept facade" with public green space. The residential/commercial building is set to be the new home of the William Blair & Co. finance firm.
