UPTOWN — A new pharmacy will soon be serving customers next door to a recently opened walk-in clinic, according to owner Mike Abdallah.

Drug Center Pharmacy hopes to open by Oct. 23 next to Omni Healthcare, which opened at 4609 N. Broadway earlier this week, Abdallah said.

"We're almost there. We're just looking for the medicine to come in and to pass our inspection," he said.

Abdallah said that the diversity of Uptown made it a perfect new home.

"There's a need for a pharmacy in the area," he said. "It's a different feel when you have a pharmacist you know and can talk to than in Corporate America."

The pharmacy will specialize in treatment for people with HIV and diabetes. These patients have to take multiple medications at different times throughout the day, which can become confusing, he said.

"We specialize in Dispill packages, where they can have one pack for their morning pills, color coordinated, which helps with compliance," said Abdallah, who has been a pharmacist for about 18 years.

The pharmacy will employ two technicians to work alongside Abdallah. One of those technicians he hopes to find within the neighborhood, he said.

"We like to hire within the area. That's key for us in every neighborhood we open in," he said.

The pharmacy hopes to expand hours and staff as it gains customers. The pharmacy will be open from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. on weekdays, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturdays and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Sundays, Abdallah said.
