JEFFERSON — Folks usually rush through the alley across Milwaukee Avenue from the Jefferson Park Transit Center as they scurry to catch a bus or a train.

But from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday, the Good City Group will bring architects, urban planners and community members together and transform the alley between the Popeye’s Chicken at 4870 N. Milwaukee Ave. and the building next door into a lab as part of an effort to get more people to walk and use public transportation, organizers said.

The event is part of Chicago Artists Month.

Ald. John Arena (45th), who has pushed to make Jefferson Park more friendly to pedestrians and bicyclists, called the project "an inventive use of the space" used by hundreds of commuters to reach the transit center. His office is a sponsor of the effort.

The project will ask participants to reflect on the last mile of their commute in an effort to create a sense of place around transit hubs that would encourage people to ditch their cars and walk or use public transportation.

The effort is designed to "highlight the lesser known cultural and historic heritage of both communities," organizers said.

For more information on the effort, which is expected to include a series of community meetings to develop between 10 and 12 "historic urban culture routes for pedestrians and cyclists," go to goodcitygroup.org.
