BUCKTOWN — A man was shot in the face with a BB or pellet gun Monday during a robbery on a neighborhood sidestreet.
The incident was one of three similar robberies Monday, and police said they are searching for three people they believe are responsible for the crimes.
The shooting occurred around 10 p.m. on the sidewalk in the 2000 block of West Concord Place just north of Wicker Park's main intersection at North, Damen and Milwaukee avenues. A 33-year-old man was walking when he was approached by a man and woman who announced a robbery and took a wallet and laptop computer, according to Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police spokesman.
The robbers were armed with a BB or pellet gun, and as they left the scene, shot the man in the face grazing his eye, Estrada said. The man was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital in stable condition.
When asked about an ABC7 report where a surgeon allegedly told the victim's family that he found metal in the man, possibly from a handgun bullet, Estrada said that a BB gun does shoot metal pellets. However, if the weapon had been a full-powered gun, the injuries would likely have been worse, he said.
Alisa Hauser says there were other incidents nearby:
The man's family said he suffered serious damage to his eye, according to ABC7.
Though no arrests have been made, Estrada said that the incident matches the pattern of two other robberies earlier the same evening: one in the 3200 Block of North Drake Avenue at 9:05 p.m. and the other in the 2900 block of North Ridgeway Avenue at 9:32 p.m.
The offenders are described as two black males and one black woman, all in their 20s. The man and woman involved in the shooting are both over 5-foot-9 and have dark complexions, according to the victim. They fled in a black Honda Coupe driven by the third offender.
