CHICAGO — Metra will install free wireless hotspots in 10 of its cars next January, the train service announced in a press release Thursday.

The installation will be part of a "test program" to see whether the routers can provide "free and dependable Internet" to passengers in each car.

The program will attempt to follow in the footsteps of the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District, which recently installed Wi-Fi on it South Shore line.

“If it’s financially feasible and our customers like the level of service this technology can provide, our agency would seek funding or sponsorships to install free Wi-Fi on more of Metra’s railcars,” Metra CEO Don Orseno said in the press release.

The six-month pilot is projected to cost about $35,000, according to the release.
