MOUNT GREENWOOD — Hungry concertgoers at Farm Aid will be able to snack on zucchini bread and beef sticks courtesy of the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences in Mount Greenwood.
A pair of students studying food science and a horticulture student will sell the homemade items from noon-7 p.m. Saturday at the concert at FirstMerit Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island.
"I'm hoping they'll learn more about operating a farm stand and how to provide customer service," said Sheila Fowler, agriculture department chair and FFA Advisor for the magnet school at 3857 W. 111th St.
Zucchini for the sweet bread was grown at the Ag School, and the beef sticks come from a grass-fed cow that was raised on the school's Southwest Side campus. All three students working at Farm Aid are juniors, Fowler said.
The Ag School students participation comes via Farm Aid's HOMEGROWN Youthmarket. Others involved include young people from Growing Power and Windy City Harvest Youth Farm.
Farm Aid planted roots 30 years ago in Champaign and returns to Illinois with its concert on Saturday. Headliners for the long-running benefit show for farmers include Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Neil Young and Dave Matthews.
The all-day music and food festival will also feature Imagine Dragons, Jack Johnson, Kacey Musgraves, Mavis Staples, Old Crow Medicine Show, Holly Williams, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, Insects vs Robots and Blackwood Quartet.
