CITY HALL — Harry Caray's widow is being celebrated on her own in Streeterville.

The City Council's Transportation Committee on Thursday cleared the way for the 100 block of East Pearson Street to be formally designated Dutchie Caray Way. The Carays had a condominium at Water Tower Place.

Ald. Brian Hopkins (2nd) actually held a dedication ceremony last month, though the council has yet to formally formally finish the process. It's set for final approval next week.

Harry Caray, of course, was the longtime Cubs and White Sox announcer beloved by fans on both sides of town and across the baseball world.

In a statement on the renaming posted on the website of the restaurant named after her husband, Dutchie Caray was praised for helping "grow the restaurant company from one location, when Harry passed in 1998, to seven locations."

The statement also said Dutchie Caray "baked 140 cupcakes per week to feed the homeless at Catholic Charities on LaSalle Street" and "she also hosted the children at Maryville Academy annually for Thanksgiving dinner and gave them all Christmas gifts." Holy Name Cathedral named a room after her to thank her for her support of the church.

The committee also amended last year's declaration of the 1300 block of South Michigan Avenue as Farley Jackmaster Funk Way. If approved by the full council, it would now be known as the King of House Farley Jackmaster Funk Way. Funk, most notably the producer of the '80s dance hit "Love Can't Turn Around," sought the change.

Funk has insisted the title is not self-appointed, but has been bestowed on him by various prominent members of what is now considered the greater Electronic Dance Music community.

"He is the King of House," said Ald. Pat Dowell (3rd) after Thursday's meeting. "So we had to make that change."
