ENGLEWOOD — Two officers and a police sergeant saved a 2-year-old toddler from choking to death Saturday evening, according to a Chicago Police news release Sunday.

Just after 8 p.m., the release said, police pulled over a speeding car in the 6700 block of South Union Avenue in Englewood. Behind the wheel they found a woman screaming, "My baby, my baby," next to an unresponsive 2-year-old girl.

The sergeant and his officers "worked as a team" to perform the Heimlich maneuver on the child and revive her, the release said.

Police said the girl was brought to Saint Bernard Hospital, where she was stabilized, then transferred to Advocate Christ Medical Center.

Police said the officers were patrolling as part of "Operation Impact," an initiative to deploy more police foot patrols in high-crime areas.
