Uber To Lease Cars to Drivers Who Don't Have Their Own

By Andrea V. Watson | September 10, 2015 3:30pm | Updated on September 10, 2015 5:27pm

AUBURN GRESHAM — The Rev. Michael Pfleger of St. Sabina Church joined leaders from the Uber a ride-hailing service to announce the launch of a new car-leasing program.

“Economic opportunity is the key to address many challenges that are facing our community,” Pfleger said. “This program will help Chicagoans who don’t have cars get access to one, so they can earn money whenever they want.”

This announcement comes after the company started a push to recruit 10,000 drivers on the South and West Sides in June.

Xchange is a new program that lets potential drivers lease a car if they don't own one.

“Just because you don’t have a car shouldn’t mean you don’t have an opportunity,” said Ebonee Green, who leads Uber's driver efforts on Chicago's South and West Sides. “By lowering the barrier and cost of car ownership, Xchange will connect more people to jobs on the Uber platform.”

The leasing program requires a $250 security deposit, and drivers can opt out after the first 30 days without paying any additional fees. Weekly rates through Xchange will range  from $80-$150, which includes basic maintenance and unlimited mileage. Both new and used cars will be available for drivers.

Drivers can use the cars for personal use and have no minimum number of days or hours they must drive, company officials said.

No matter what credit score a person has, they’re encouraged to apply, officials said.
