SOUTH LOOP — Portillo's, the suburban restaurant chain known for its hot dogs and chocolate shakes, wants to open a South Loop store.

The Oak Brook-based chain last week applied for a building permit at 520 W. Taylor St, city records show. If built, the restaurant would be the second Portillo's in the city, following a River North location.

The new restaurant would sit across the street from The Maxwell shopping center, which is opening a Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant next month. Cook County property records show 520 W. Taylor is a parking lot held by a venture of California-based Red Sea Group, a real estate company that owns data centers and other properties.

City records indicate Portillo's permit application is still pending. Red Sea executive Avner Papouchado and Nick Scarpino, Portillo's director of marketing, did not return messages seeking comment.
