THE LOOP — School bells will be ringing across the city Tuesday for the first day of classes in the new school year, so let's have a pop quiz, shall we, for that first day of class.

The first day of school, OMG, where do I even go?

If you don't know your neighborhood school, you can find it at the CPS school locator site.

How do I enroll if I haven't already?

CPS advises that you call or visit the school to get details.

I hear these magnet schools and others offering selective enrollment are pretty nifty, how do I get in?

Almost all of those slots have already been filled, but you can try calling CPS' Office of Access and Enrollment at 773-553-2060, or visit its website.

Do I need shots or a medical exam?

Yes, if you're enrolling in CPS for the first time, as a preschooler or kindergartner, or if entering the sixth or ninth grade, you need a medical exam with shots up to date. Bring the paperwork, and make sure the exam took place within a year of enrollment. Vision exams are required for kindergartners, and a dental exam for preschoolers, kindergartners, second-graders and sixth-graders. Other shots are required for sixth- and 12th-graders, including a new requirement for a meningitis vaccine. See the health requirements website to check if you're up to date and ready to enroll.

OK, all set, when do I need to be there?

That's where things start getting complicated. CPS announced altered bell times for dozens of schools over the summer, in the belief it would cut transportation costs with buses able to double up on routes (and give sleepy teens more time before high school). Yet then it rolled times back for a few dozen other schools that sought to retain the status quo. CPS advises that you call your school's main office, or call the Office of Teaching and Learning at 773-553-2517. Here's a list of schools with new bell times and when they'll be ringing.

Can I wear thongs on my feet — or elsewhere?

CPS advises you check with your school for any dress code.

Do I need to pack a lunch?

Under the new Community Eligibility Provision, breakfast and lunch are free to all students, although they have to pay $2-$3 for seconds.

My kid needs a CTA pass. Should I get it at the station?

Schools handle distribution of student passes.

My child requires district transportation. How do I arrange it?

See the student transportation website for forms and eligibility for those with disabilities, or call Transportation Services at 773-553-2860.

Speaking of students with disabilities, what about those with an Individualized Education Plan?

Call the Office of Diverse Learner Supports and Services at 773-553-1800. They handle evaluation and implementation.

Thanks a lot, you haven't answered my particular question, what about that?

CPS has a Back to School Hotline at 773-553-3223.
