UPTOWN — Gloria Steinem will be reading, signing and discussing her fourth memoir My Life on the Road in Uptown next month in what's being billed as "the feminist event of the year."

Steinem will discuss the novel with Roxane Gay, author of Bad Feminist, at 7 p.m. on Oct. 29 at the People's Church, 941 W. Lawrence Ave.

Steinem is a "writer, activist, organizer and inspiring leader" and the story is "a candid account of her life as a traveler, a listener and a catalyst," according to their website.

Steinem traveled extensively as a child, and describes her father packing the car every fall to drive across the country in search of work, and adventure. Her new book explores how those experiences informed her activism, centered on listening to people "whose voices and ideas would inspire change and revolution."

"My Life on the Road" charts Steinem's growth, the growth of a revolutionary movement and "the story of how surprising encounters on the road shaped both" beginning with her first social activism experience among women in India as a journalist in the '60s, according to the description of the book.

You must preorder or purchase the hardcover of My Life on the Road from Women & Children First, 5233 N. Clark St., to attend. Companion tickets will not be offered. Preordered books and tickets will be available the day the book is published, Oct. 27. To avoid lines, guests are recommended to pick up the tickets and book in advance, the bookstore said.

Online tickets sales end Oct. 26th. And Doors of the People's Church will open at 6:15 p.m. on the night of the event. The book signing will begin at 8 p.m.
