NORWOOD PARK — Two Norwood Park residents have received the Girl Scouts top honor, the Girl Scout Gold Award.

The Gold Award recognizes the work of Girl Scouts who spend at least 65 hours completing a service project after serving in a leadership role for at least 40 hours. The project must fulfill a need within the community, create change and be sustainable, Scout leaders said.

Alexis Garcia, 19, earned her Gold Award by enlisting students at Taft High School and residents at Norwood Crossing to make pillows for the Patriotic Pillow Project. The group sends pillows to wounded veterans.

"I wanted to show the students how much they could learn from the elderly, and I wanted to give the elderly some examples of bright, young minds that don't feed into the stereotypes about my generation," Garcia said in a statement.
