UPTOWN — FLATS Chicago will be featuring residents' art in their new exhibition #WeareFLATS, opening Friday.

The exhibit will feature two artists painting live as two local musicians, Mercedes Webb and Scout Ripley, perform, according to their website. The exhibit will feature work from current FLATS residents John Dominguez, Michael Rivera, and Jacob Thomas, a representative for FLATSstudio said.

Dominguez, who will be displaying art for the second time with FLATSstudio, "constructs neo-expressionist paintings that are inspired by personal identity." Some of Dominguez's work can be viewed here.

Rivera works for the Chicago Tribune as a photographer. Thomas, whose work has been on the cover of Newsweek, will be painting a mural live at the event, FLATSstudio said.

"FLATSstudio is our way of using empty storefronts and vacant commercial spaces in FLATS buildings to support, engage and encourage the artistic spirits of our community in the neighborhoods where FLATS residents live," the company said in a statement.

"At FLATS, we believe that any open space can become a blank canvas for the arts. FLATSstudio creates spaces to live, produce, and exhibit-tying the artists directly with the community by creating services available to give back."

The event will be from 6-10 p.m. at the FLATSstudio No. 1050, at 1050 W. Wilson Ave. Cocktails will be provided courtesy of Koval and RSVP is necessary.
