UPTOWN — Courtenay Language Arts Center will be without a principal when school returns in session next month.

Macquline King, the current principal at the school at 4420 N. Beacon St., announced she will be on leave when the school year begins on Sept. 8 via email late Wednesday.

"I wanted to inform you, that I will be on leave during the opening of the school," King said in the email. "With the range of talents and abilities of our staff, I am certain our students are in great hands."

"Mrs. Caroline Lovely, a retired principal, will join the admin team during my leave for support," King's email said.

King became principal of Courtenay just before the start of the 2013-2014 school year. At the time, the 18-year Chicago Public Schools veteran who had previously served as principal at Dumas Technology Academy described her transition to the new school as seamless.

"I've moved in and that's about it," King said in July 2013.

King's email did not provide further details about her departure or whether she would return to Courtenay.

This is a developing story. DNAinfo has reached out to King and CPS for comment.
