CHICAGO — Walter Payton College Prep is the 10th-best high school in the United States, according to Newsweek rankings.
Payton, 1034 N. Wells St., was the top-ranked Illinois school on the list, which ranks 500 high schools based on how they prepare students for college. Payton ranked high due to high marks in college readiness (93.8 percent), graduation rate (98.6 percent) and students bound for college (97.8 percent).
Northside College Prep (No. 12), 5501 N. Kedzie Ave., and Jones College Prep (No. 46), 700 S. State St., also made the rankings, though no other Chicago schools broke the top 500.
Payton is slated to have its budget slashed by $362,411 with unchanged enrollment this year, while Northside is facing $411,024 in cuts while adding three students, raising its enrollment to 1,054.
Jones College Prep, which is expected to see its enrollment grow by 234 to 1,670, will gain $1,452,076.

No. 4: Union County Magnet High School in Scotch Plains, New Jersey
No. 3: Academy for Mathematics, Science and Engineering in Rockaway, New Jersey
No. 2: High Technology High School in Lincroft, New Jersey
No. 1: Thomas Jefferson High School in Alexandria, Virginia
