Man Yells 'You Can't Park Here,' Then Shoots Driver in Head, Police Say

By Mark Schipper | August 19, 2015 5:46am

UPTOWN — A man apparently angry about a car being parked in an alley behind an Uptown apartment building pulled a gun and shot the driver in the head as he pulled away, police said.

The 19-year-old driver survived the gunshot. The bullet went through a rear car window, through the car's driver's side headrest and into the back of the victim's skull, which fractured, police said.

It happened around 11:30 p.m. Aug. 7 as the driver and a passenger sat in a parked car behind an apartment building in the 4900 block of North Kenmore.

The man sitting in the passenger seat later told police that a man in his early 20s emerged from the building's back door and yelled "You can't park here," police said.

The driver put the car in reverse and started to move. But the gunman fired a single shot into the car, police said.

The shooter then got into a black sport utility vehicle and drove south down the alley before turning onto Ainslie Street, police said. He got away, and detectives are still looking for him.

The victim was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in serious condition.

An officer posted near the intersection of Argyle and Kenmore because of prior shootings in the area was first to the scene, police said. A man came up to the officer at 11:35 p.m. that night to say he thought someone had just gotten shot in the alley.

Two men, the driver and his lone passenger, were still in the car when the officer arrived. The passenger had wrapped his shirt around the driver’s head in an effort to stop the flow of blood, police said.
