DOWNTOWN — Metra will install charging stations at four downtown locations, the train service announced in a news release Tuesday.

Work has already begun to bring the extra power outlets to Millennium Station, and similar projects at Van Buren Street Station, LaSalle Street Station and Ogilvie Transportation Center are due to finish by September, the release said.

Metra officials pointed to a major spike in passengers using phones and laptops on the Metra during the last five years, which they said "may be boosting Metra ridership," according to the release. Metra has installed power outlets in railcars and is about to introduce a mobile ticketing app, the release said.

Metra is also "working to explore ways" to bring free Wi-Fi to waiting areas at its downtown stations, the release said.
