UNION STATION — Thousands of hairnetted volunteers are gathering this week at Union Station to pack 750,000 meals for hungry children throughout the world.

More than 4,000 people affiliated with Feed My Starving Children, a Christian non-profit based in Minnesota, will begin packing the rice-based meals at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Union Station's Great Hall. By the time they leave Thursday, they expect to easily beat the 500,000 meals they prepared here last year.

"We came to Chicago to feed a lot of kids," volunteer Marilyn Maurella said. "We're just trying to increase our footprint here."

Founded in 1987, the charity sends meals packed with rice, dried vegetables, and soy protein to more than 70 developing countries across the globe. The organization in total expects to deliver 270 million meals this year.
