ROSELAND — Those who knew Briona White, the 22-year-old college student found shot to death in Roseland Thursday night, said she was a "caring" and "brave" member of the community.

"She really knew what was going on around here, and she was always of a mind to do something about it," said Linda High, White's neighbor on the 10100 block of South Carpenter Avenue. "I was absolutely horrified when I found out [she was killed]. She had her whole life ahead of her."

High's husband, Donald High, added that White was "always very warm and friendly, asking us how we were all the time."

Police found White on the 500 block of West 109th Street Thursday around 7 p.m. alongside 20-year-old William Drake, who was also gunned down. Drake was pronounced at the scene, and White was taken to Christ Memorial Hospital before she was pronounced dead.

While ABC7 said police called Drake a "documented gang member," White's neighbors said she'd never got caught up in violence before Thursday.

"I never knew her to hang out with gangs — she was an honor roll student," said neighbor Jackie Pratcher.

White's parents told ABC News that she was about to head back to Kansas State University, where she was studying to be an orthodontist.

"I don't know what happened that night, but I know she didn't deserve it," Pratcher said.
