WEST PULLMAN — The Julian D. King Gift Foundation, which was founded in honor of Jennifer Hudson's slain nephew Julian King, will give away free school supplies on Aug. 14.

Hudson and her sister, Julia Hudson, created the foundation in 2008. Volunteers will be at the Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center Chicago, 1250 W. 119th St., to help put on a back-to-school health fair from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

The organization is also celebrating "Hatch Day," in honor of Julia's son, who would have turned 14 this month. Hatch Day is something Julian created as a child. He would make invitations and pass them to family and friends.

"He always wanted to hatch things," said Hudson. "He got it from a cartoon. It was something I wanted, a hatch day. He would say, 'Today is my hatch day.' This is our way of giving our hatch day and being able to help other kids through his memory."

The annual event is for needy families. On Aug. 14 children will be able to receive free health checkups and services, along with school supplies. There will be give-aways, games, music and vendors. Parents must bring a state issued ID, medical insurance card, school ID and report card for their children and a school supply list.
