COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — An Austin man was held without bail Thursday after prosecutors alleged he shot three people, one fatally, during an argument in June.

The shooting happened about 6:20 p.m. on June 14 in the 900 block of North Lorel Avenue in Austin, according to Assistant State's Attorney Joe DiBella, who spoke during a bond hearing Thursday.

Demetrius Bronson, 26, met with three men to discuss "an incident" that had occurred between Bronson and one of the men a few days prior, DiBella said.

An argument broke out, and Bronson pulled a gun and fired several rounds, prosecutors said.

Byron Floyd, 31, was shot in his right flank and back, and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to police and prosecutors.

A second victim, a 36-year-old man, was shot four times as he tried to run away, DiBella said. The victim was listed in serious condition but survived. The third man, 31, was shot once in his upper leg; he was treated and released for the through-and-through wound, authorities said.

Police arrested Bronson, who lives on the street where the shooting occurred, after witnesses identified him in a photo array. Bronson was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery.

Bronson's public defender said Bronson previously worked as a machinist and at a local Home Depot. He lives with his girlfriend and 8-month-old daughter, she said.
